Teenage Wits

Privacy?

Teenagers today are so concerned about their amount of privacy. They assume that they are entitled to it. Even though, it is very doubtful that they know what to do with it. Teens are following a trend that sets forth bad manners, low respect for others and high self-centered actions. As parents, we have taught them somewhere that they deserve what we have. Today's parents are so worried about losing their teen to the world that they are not focusing on teaching their teen about the world first. We feel if we agitate them, then we all go off the deep end. This does not have to be. Allow your teen time alone, but let them know what you expect out of it whether it be homework, computer, reading or just downtime. Do not allow your teens to go off in another room and chat for hours with friends. This allows the friends and the world to teach them instead of you. Put both feet in as when you decided to have this child. Keep your feet moving forward in the right direction no matter what. Teens today need someone to follow, not someone to lead them.

I agreee completely! Teenagers need to be guided through this confusing time and it's very common for them to turn to their friends. It's the blind leading the blind. It's so important to stay connected with your teen! Don't let the home be divided into 'them' and 'us'.

Teens today have been made to feel like we owe them because we are always as parents going to push for their happiness. Maybe we have blinders on that will not let us see the future for them, but we need to take them off.

Good piece of information. My teenage daughter has her time but also is aware that family time is as important. Another suggestion is to keep the 'family' computer in the family room or main room. This helps prevent them from isolating themselves in their room and being anti-social with family members.
